Welcome

Welcome

A warm welcome to you. Thank you, and perhaps even well done, for taking a moment to be here. Investing in yourself is a wonderful and often courageous thing to do, but you need to find someone you can trust enough to be vulnerable with.

My name is Patrick. I am an NCPS-accredited counsellor (NCS24-04206) based in Mid Devon, living with my partner and two children. The themes that brought me to therapy—both as a client and later as a counsellor—are concerned with emancipation, empowerment, building a strong sense of self, courage, and autonomy. I also have personal first-hand experience dealing with themes around adoption.

If you are seeking in-person sessions, I offer a safe space in my home in Crediton, Devon for you to bring whatever you feel comfortable with and all that is important to you.

I also offer online counselling appointments for those who cannot travel or simply feel more relaxed in their own home.

I will be present alongside you throughout; mutually and respectfully working together. Yours will be the viewpoint from which we look at your world together.

If you would like to reach out, I'm here for you on the contact details provided. I always offer a free 20-minute video call to begin with.

This gives us the opportunity to get to know each other a bit, allowing you to then trust your instincts in making a decision.

How I work (and some thoughts on therapy)

How I Work

I have primarily studied the Person-Centred model of therapy along with elements of existentialism. I am passionate about the principles that govern Person-Centred Therapy. Through personal experience as a one-time client myself, I have found them to be incredibly liberating and enduring. It can sometimes take time and a committed investment to yield therapeutic change, but through that process, great insight, personal wisdom, peace of mind, and confidence can be obtained.

The logo I have on my website is sketched by my partner. It is one of my favourite images ever: a solitary oak tree standing in the middle of a field surrounded by beautiful countryside. I loved this image long before I understood why. The sprawling, lush greenery of the open English countryside always instilled in me a sense of freedom, but I was particularly drawn to the sight of lone trees. Slowly over time, the answers began to reveal themselves to me.

Lone tree metaphor based on my counselling theory

No one is an island. For the good and the bad, we are all a sum of our caregivers, friends, children, culture, and environment, but we must ultimately all stand alone. I’m reminded of the great paradox of life; the oxymoron that we are all 'alone together'. This can feel like a daunting prospect, but I have found that the more we understand ourselves and can relate with deeper meaning to the experiences that we have in life, the more connected we feel to ourselves and others. We shape the world around us within, and that is why the image of the solitary tree is one that reaches me at a fundamental level. We stand alone but in a symbiotic relationship with all the sustaining beauty that surrounds us through life, in all types of weather.

I see my role as your therapist to be a catalyst for your own thought process. We will mutually work alongside each other, always from your frame of reference, and always knowing that you are the expert on you. I may offer observations; I may point out themes, patterns, and frequently used words, but ultimately, I am reflecting back what you are giving me. This broadens awareness, and with that, we can begin to understand ourselves more deeply. We gain an appreciative, rewarding, nurturing, and compassionate understanding of why, what, and who we are.
